When I was a child, I’ve always been interested in technology that’s why sometimes other people call me a tech-savvy person. It was fascinating for me because I’ve witnessed firsthand how it has changed the way we live, work, and interact.

What is the nature of technology?

The nature of technology is about the study of tools, techniques, and systems that are designed to solve problems and improve human life.

Technology has the ability to adapt to nature, science, and human creativity. It is always developing as new challenges and possibilities emerge.

The constant evolution and development of technology are one of the most important aspects of its nature.

Technology is not a fixed thing, but rather a dynamic and ever-changing force fashioned by human intellect and societal requirements.

When new challenges and possibilities develop, technology is called upon to adapt, often in unexpected and innovative ways.

For example, when the Covid-19 pandemic occurred, scientists and engineers all around the world worked to produce preventive measures and vaccinations at unimaginable speed. This demonstrates the strength and adaptability of technology in the face of adversity.

When I was a kid, the first thing that comes to my mind about the nature of technology was survival. Think of our ancestors such as the caveman, they created fire and can now live through winter and cook more easily.

The same may be stated in our current situation.

Farmers use machines such as tractors to sow seeds and collect crops, then they transport them to the local market and earn some income.

Now the farmer can feed himself and his family with the money that he earned. Without technology, they might starve because it might take time to finish their job.

The same goes with computers, the first commercial computers were developed for the military to ensure the country’s safety and survival of its people.

Technology is based on nature

The materials we use to manufacture and power our devices are one example of how technology is based on nature. Many technological materials such as metals and semiconductors are obtained from natural resources.

For example, the lithium-ion batteries that are used in smartphones and electric vehicles rely on lithium which is collected from underground sources.

Similarly, silicon wafers used in computer chips are produced from sand, a naturally occurring substance. In this sense, technology is not only inspired by nature, but it also relies on it for its growth and operation.

Aside from where technology came from, we also want to discuss how nature inspired the development of the latest technologies.

The procedures we use to create and produce our technologies are another manner in which technology is dependent on nature.

Several of these processes are inspired by nature, from the structure of leaves to the flight of birds.

For example, biomimicry attempts to learn from nature to build new technologies that are more efficient, sustainable, and robust.

By copying the strategies and structure seen in nature, researchers have developed technologies such as solar panels that replicate the way leaves gather sunlight and drones that mirror the way birds fly.

While technology is founded on the principles of science and engineering, it is also deeply rooted in the natural world. All the resources, processes, and structures that are found in nature.

By taking a holistic approach to technological development, we can work towards a future that is not only innovative and efficient.

We can also be sustainable and resilient which reflects the interconnectedness of nature and technology.

Technology both draws on and contributes to science

Technology and science are strongly intertwined, with one relying on and contributing to the other in a variety of ways.

The technology relies on scientific discoveries and principles to innovate and evolve, whereas science relies on technical instruments and methods to investigate and comprehend the natural world.

In this sense, technology and science are complementary forces that work together to increase our understanding and make our lives better.

Technology depends on science in one aspect by relying on scientific ideas and findings. Many of today’s innovations such as cell phones to medical gadgets are based on scientific findings made decades or centuries ago.

For example, the development of computers was strongly reliant on physics and mathematical concepts. But the development of medical technologies was heavily reliant on developments in biology and chemistry.

In this sense, technology is founded on scientific knowledge and it relies on continual scientific study to innovate and improve.

Meanwhile, technology advances science by giving new instruments and methods for exploring and discovering. Technology has transformed the way scientists investigate the natural world, from telescopes and microscopes to supercomputers and AI algorithms.

These technologies enable scientists to collect and analyze massive volumes of data, model complicated systems and investigate phenomena that would be impossible to witness directly otherwise.

By providing these tools, technology is helping in the advancement of scientific research and study in a wide range of subjects from astrophysics to molecular biology.

In my own experience, I have seen how technology both draws on and contributes to science in a variety of ways.

I want to make renewable energy an example because I’ve seen how technological advancements in renewable energy have led to new scientific discoveries and how ongoing scientific research drives technology.

For example, advances in material science have resulted in the creation of new types of solar panels that are more efficient and inexpensive, while continuous biofuel research is pushing the development of new technologies for creating renewable energy from biomass. 

These examples show how technology and science are collaborating to improve our understanding of the natural world and find innovative solutions to serious global concerns.

Technology always have side effects

Technology has become an integral part of our life, bringing with them several advantages and conveniences. Nonetheless, it is critical to understand that every technology has side effects, both beneficial and harmful.

These side effects might appear in a variety of ways, ranging from software problems to hardware issues. Recognizing and managing these side effects is critical to ensure that technology serves us in a long-term and equitable manner.

One way that technology might have unexpected side effects is during the design and development phase. Because current technologies are so complicated, it is hard to foresee every conceivable use case or scenario, which might lead to unexpected flaws.

For example, the famous “blue screen of death” in the Windows operating system is a well-known defect that has caused many people to lose their work or data.

Similarly, software flaws in self-driving cars have resulted in accidents and fatalities, emphasizing the significance of thorough testing and quality assurance.

Another way that technology might have side effects is through its usage and maintenance. Even the best-designed systems might have flaws due to wear and tear or environmental variables over time.

For example, batteries in smartphones can deteriorate over time. It results in reduced performance and shorter battery life.

Moving parts in equipment can also wear out or become misaligned, it would result in malfunctions or breakdowns. It is critical to maintain and repair technologies regularly to avoid errors from happening or to correct them before they become severe issues.

I remember when I once purchased a new laptop that had a flaw in the trackpad causing it to become unresponsive at times. While this was a small flaw that did not affect the laptop’s general operation, it was nonetheless annoying.

That time I realized that one of the natures of technology is they always have side effects. That’s why we need to address these issues proactively and responsibly.

So again, it is important to take note that the nature of technology is not fixed or permanent, but rather evolves and changes with time.

When new technologies emerge, old ones become outdated, and our knowledge of and relationship with technology evolves.

The nature of technology is also complex that’s why we need to approach it with a reflective mindset.

By doing so, we may harness the power of technology to make the world a better place for ourselves and future generations while also addressing the negative consequences of its usage.
